Introduction

The study of organization and of the collection of people within them together comprises the field of organizational behavior.

       Organization behavior is the study of human behavior in organizational setting the interface between human behavior and the organization and the organization itself.

Organization is a field of study that investigates the impact that individuals, groups, and structure have on behavior within organizations, for the purpose of applying such knowledge towards improving an organizations effectiveness.

Organizations are social system. Organization is a combination of humanity and technology. Organizational behavior is the study and applications of knowledge about how people act within the organization. It is human tool of human benefit.

A complex set of forces affects the nature of organization today. It is classified into 4 areas –

  1. People                                        
  2. Structure                         
  3. Technology    
  4. 4.    Environment

Nature of organizational behavior 

  1. A field of study and not a discipline:-

A discipline is an accepted science with a theoretical foundation that serves as the basis for research and analysis. Organization behavior is not accepted as science, it is treated as a distinct field of study in which we study principle, concept, and process in this field of enquiring.

  • Inter disciplinary approach: –

An interdisciplinary approach integrates the relevant knowledge drawn from different discipline for some specific purpose. Organizational behavior draws heavily from psychology, sociology and anthropology. It also takes relevant knowledge from economics, political science, law and history. Thus OB is nothing apart from the integration of knowledge from different disciplines.

  • An applied science:

OB is both science as well as art. The basic objective of OB is to make application of various researches to solve the organizational problems related to human behavior aspect. It concentrates on applied research.

  • Normative and value centered :-

Positive science suggests only cause – effect relationship, however normative science prescribe how the various findings of the research can be applied to get organizational result which are acceptable to the society. Thus what is acceptable by the society or organization is a matter of value to the people concerned. This aspect cannot be explained by positive science.

  • Humanistic and optimistic: –

OB focuses the attention on the people from humanistic point of view. It is based on the belief that needs and motivation of people are of high concern. Further there is optimism about the innate potential of man to be independent, creative, productive, and capable of contributing positively to the objective of the organization.

  • Oriented towards organizational objectives:-

OB tries to integrate both individual objective and organizational objective so that these are achieved simultaneously. For this purpose. It suggests various behavioral approaches.

  • A total systems Approach: –

In this the living system of an organization is viewed as an enlargement of a man. The system approach is an integrative approach which takes into account all the variables affecting organizational functioning. It includes behavioral science, socio-psychological factors, interpersonal orientation, social and cultural factors etc…..
